Time and time again you have read in this very blog about my love and admiration for Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and how "Pet Sounds" is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Anyhow this weekend I'm out on Long Island visiting my parents and last night my mom and I watched a really interesting documentary about the Beach Boys that aired on the local PBS station.
Besides making iconic, brilliant music the band had a pretty interesting existence that involved; an abusive controlling father, Charles Manson, an intense imagined rivalry with the Beatles, paling around with Watergate figure G. Gordon Liddy (that was lead singer Mike Love who is one of rock's great assholes), mental illness, Christie McVie of Fleetwood Mac fame and meditating in India with the Beatles and the Maharishi. A good biography to read about the Beach Boys is "Heroes and Villains the True Story of the Beach Boys" by Steven Gains.
This year marks the Beach Boys' 50th year and that have been touring all summer to celebrate. They played both the Beacon Theater in NYC and The Jones Beach Theater on Long Island within the last month, I'm sorta bummed because I missed both shows I was away the weekend of the Beacon Theater show and the Jones Beach Show was during Northside. But I heard that actor and Mike Love buddy John Stamos played drums at both shows, so that makes me feel like I didn't miss anything. And in honor of this tour the band has released a new album called "That's Why God Made the Radio", the documentary premiered the video for the title track off this new album and both my mom and I were really impressed with "That's Why God Made the Radio". It sounded like Brian was back in creative control again, the track didn't sound like a slick sad attempt at nostalgia...ahem that was the band during the Mike Love years! Below is the clip for "That's Why God Made the Radio", enjoy!
