It seems over the last few weeks the blog entries I have written, have been remembrances of musicians who passed away i.e. MCA, Donna Summer, Donald "Duck" Dunn and now Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees. Robin Gibb past away from cancer yesterday he was 62 years old.
The Bee Gees consisted of three brothers, Barry and twins Maurice and Robin Gibb, the band rose to super star status in the late 70's when they provided songs for the soundtrack to the film "Saturday Night Fever", the biggest hit being "Staying Alive".
The Bee Gees are most known for their late 70's disco sound but prior to the success of "Saturday Night Fever" the band had a very different sound it was very Beatlesque in nature. With three part harmony (which continued into their disco era sound) and Robin's very distinct vibrato rather then Barry Gibb's high falsetto which was a trade mark of the disco era Bee Gees.
The Bee Gees wrote great well crafted songs in both their Beatlesque and disco incarnations. One of my favorite songs from the Bee Gees "Beatlesque" incarnation is "The New York Mining Disaster 1941" which features Robin on lead vocals. RIP Robin Gibb!
