This weekend has been one lazy but relaxing weekend. I have done nothing but go to yoga and watch TV. In my Saturday night channel surfing I came across a marathon of the Monkees TV show from the 60's. The Monkees were called "the pre fab four" they were put together for a TV show that was inspired by the Beatles movie "A Hard Day's Night" , the members of the Monkees were Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Mike Nesmith and Mickey Dolenz. A lot of top notch songwriters of the day such as Carole King, Neil Diamond, Harry Nilsson and Cynthina Mann wrote songs for the pre fab four. The TV show ran from 1966 to 1968 and the band officially broke up in 1970.
Back in 1986 when I was about nine years old, MTV started to re-air episodes of the Monkees TV show and I remember my sister, myself and all our friends got really into the Monkees from watching all the old episodes on MTV. That year Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork and Davy Jones sans Mike Nesmith embarked on a 20th anniversary reunion tour. And that anniversary tour was my very first concert, we saw Mickey, Davy and Peter play Great Adventure Amusement Park in New Jersey. The things I remember about that show was being so into it and a really sweet NJ hair metal couple sitting behind us asking my sister and I which Monkee was our favorite and my mom buying t-shirts for my sister and I and all our friends.
Watching episodes of the Monkees last night made me remember what great songs the Monkees had and why I wanted to be a musician when I was nine.
Posted below are clips for: "Pleasant Valley Sunday" (this song has sort of a punk feel to it & check out Davy Jones trying to play the bass which is bigger then him) and the opening and closing themes to the Monkees TV show and "Cuddly Toy" which was written by Harry Nilsson.

That concert at Great Adventure was my first concert as well. I was 10 and remember sitting in that ampitheater all day because we were going to both shows that day. I enjoyed the Monkees (because my parents were Monkees fans and I knew all of their songs) and Weird Al but would have rather been enjoying the rides in the park than the other groups that were part of that reunion show!
