The next Whatever blog paaarttty happens on July 28th at Bruar Falls in Brooklyn, Libel, Wojcik The Nico Blues and The Diamond Center all play. Doors are 7pm and the cover is $10 it's going to be a wing ding of an affair that you need to be at.
If you remember I mentioned that the only other band that I saw this year at Northside was Dom at Brooklyn Bowl. It was a very wild, fun and very rock and roll evening as my dates for the night where Jesse Elliott of These United States, Keenan from Bottle Up and Go and John McCauley from Deer Tick.
This week it was announced that actor Penn Badgley from the TV show "Gossip Girl" will play the late singer song writer Jeff Buckley in a bio pic. The Jeff Buckley bio pic that Badgley stars in deals with Buckley's performance at a memorial concert for his father Tim Buckley at St. Marks Church in New York in the mid 90's. Stereogum said today that the Buckley bio with "Gossip Girl" dude does not have the rights to Jeff Buckley's music and that Buckley's mother Mary is producing another bio pic on Jeff that does have access to Jeff's music.
Just reading the synopsis of the "Gossip Girl" dude's Buckley bio pic and reading that this bio pic doesn't have access to Jeff's music all I can think of is the film "Factory Girl".
"Factory Girl" came out a few years ago and it was a bio pic on Edie Sedgwick that starred Sienna Miller as Edie Sedgwick. I remember when the film was about to be released most of the members of Andy Warhol's Factory condemned the film as lies in the press and Lou Reed refused to allow any of the Velvet Underground's music to be used after viewing the first cut of "Factory Girl". Being the Edie Sedgwick/Andy Warhol nerd I'am, I just had to see it and "Factory Girl" sucked as badly as the former members of the Factory said it would and I don't blame Lou Reed for not wanting to have his music used in this stinker of a film. Anyhow after Lou Reed refused to allow any of the Velvet Underground's music to be used the producers of "Factory Girl" recruited Yo La Tango to write "Velvet Undergroundesque" songs for the film and it was bad!
Ten bucks says that the producers of "Gossip Girl" dude's Buckley film do the same thing since they don't have rights to Jeff Buckley's music and another ten bucks says that Bon Iver is the band that the producers use to write "Jeff Buckleyeqse" music for the film.
Very few music bio pics are well done, the two that I loved were the Dylan bio pic "I'm Not There" and "The Buddy Holly Story" starring bat shit insane Gary Busey in his finest performance.
There is nothing better then the real thing, below is a clip of Jeff Buckley's beautiful song from "Grace" called "Lover You Should Have Never Come Over".
Here is a clip of Jeff Buckley's father Tim singing the song "Song of the Siren" from the Monkees TV Show in 1968.
In all my floating on the Northside Fest cloud nine, I totally forgot to thank the good folks over at L Magazine for choosing me to curate a Northside showcase and in particular I'd really like to thank Jeff and Lauren at L for all their hard work in making the Northside Festival 2011 a festival to remember!
One band that I have been obsessing over lately is the Brooklyn based band Backwords. Backwords make gorgeous full sounding alt folk that at times sounds almost like phsycadelic music and at other times like simple sweet 1960's pop. If "Pet Sounds" era Brian Wilson, Syd Barrett and Jeff Tweedy from Wilco ever collaborated it would be Backwords.
I have been listening to the band's album "Quilt" 24/7 and have been enjoying it immensely, I'm finding "Quilt" to be the perfect soundtrack for a Brooklyn summer, it's complex but simple and it makes you feel good all over.
I was lucky enough to see Backwords play last night at the Rock Shop right here in Brooklyn and the band puts on one incredible live show. The next show Backwords plays is at Union Hall in Brooklyn on 7/6/11 all you New Yorkers and all of you who will be in New York at that time need to check out Backwords at Union Hall.
Below is the clip for Backword's song "And then Sigh".
Being a child of the 80's and a nerdy one at that I was and still am a "Weird" Al fan. "Weird" Al just released his parody of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" called "Perform This Way". In the video "Weird" Al's head is super imposed on a young woman's body while wearing Gagaesque outfits, make up and hair dos.
I have to say that "Weird" Al's head on a body double's body is a little freaky to look at but the "Perform This Way" video is way more edgier and stranger then anything Lady Gaga has done! Even Al's version of the song is far better then the original! And can't decide if "Weird" Al in drag looks like Jenna from "30 Rock" or Molly Shannon formally of "SNL".
Here is the video for "Perform This Way" judge for yourselves.
So the Whatever blog official Northside showcase was made into a Saturday afternoon party and it was a smashing success! Huge thanks and hugs to; Libel, Small Mountain Path, The Senors of Marseilles, The Nico Blues, Alyson Greenfield, Jesse Elliott, Wyatt our door guy and the Whatever blog's fearless road manager Mr. Ben Archer without whom none of this would have been able to happen! And I want to give a shout out to the cool couple from Boston (sorry guys didn't catch your names) who came down for Northside and made the Whatever blog party their Saturday afternoon stop!
Being that I was doing my own showcase for Northside this year I really didn't have time to go and roam and check out other showcases and discover new bands and artists. All though myself and Mr. Elliott did go to check out Dom at the Brooklyn Bowl on Friday night and they were awesome! Jesse and I had a wild and fun time with the Dom guys, John McCauley from Deer Tick and Keenan from Bottle Up and Go on Friday night.
Anyhow I'm looking forward to Northside 2012!
I'm sad to report that Bruce Springsteen's sax player and long time sideman Clarence Clemons died today he was 69 years old. And my condolences to Nick and the other members of the Clemons family and the E. Street Band family.
One solo song that Clarence Clemons did was a duet with Jackson Brown called "Your a Friend of Mine" the song is kinda cheesy and has become a staple on ac radio stations. It's a guilty pleasure song for me, the message of the song always puts a smile on my face.
