Groupies A Rant!

Sorry I'm in one of those moods today so just bare with me. At the end of the month I will be moving into another apartment and in organizing for my move I found Pamela Des Bares book "Let's Spend the Night Together", I brought right as it came out and read it in a weekend. Anyhow I was looking for an easy read last weekend and so I decided to re read it again, as I often do with books that I read years before.

Miss Pamela interviews some interesting ladies in this book i.e. Bebe Buell (Liv Tyler's Mom) who was a top fashion model and then became a musician, Margaret Moser, who was part of the Texas Blonds and then became the music writer for the Austin Chronicle and is one of the founders of SXSW, Pleasent Gehman who is a punk musician, writer and actress,Gail Zappa wife of the late Frank Zappa who oversaw and still oversees all of Zappa's business affairs and Tura Santana a b movie actress who stared in "Faster Pussycat Kill Kill" and other cult classics films from the 1960's and dated Elvis Presley.

She also interviews women whose only claim to fame is blowing Kid Rock in the back of his tour bus and fucking Van Halen and all their road crew in one night. These are the interviews that made me sad but also made me cringe at the same time.

And there is a website I go on from time to time called Groupie Central it's basically a message board where women write in about their encounters with various rock musicians and ask if certain rock musicians are into hooking up with groupies. Rarely do I go on this board because like those interviews with those women whose only claim to fame is getting a "facial" from the dude who won the first season of "INXS Rock Star" it makes me feel horrified.

It upsets me that these women feel the only way  to empower themselves is to sleep with musicians and do degrading things to get these morons attention. I also get upset when these girls forge an identity through musicians and attack other girls over a musician.

My parting words with this post are this; sleeping with a musician for one night isn't going to empower you and letting some nearly 40 year old fuck head who is 12 years old emotionally with a huge sense of entitlement cause he plays drums degrade you isn't going to make you feel better about yourself and going after another girl...I mean come on over some idiot who plays a guitar who could give two shits about you and other girl!

If you want to presue your musicial passion..start a band, manage a band, start a music blog or a music photography blog, do PR for bands or promote shows.

Those are my two cents...

It's summer

One of my very favorite things to do in the summer is go to Prospect Park in Brooklyn and Prospect Park has this beautiful band shell where a non profit arts group called BRIC Arts puts on an amazing summer time concert/movie series called Celebrate Brooklyn. Most of the Celebrate Brooklyn concerts and films are free but there are Celebrate Brooklyn benefit shows where you have to buy a ticket most of the tickets for the benefit shows are fairly inexpensive.

I've been going to the Celebrate Brooklyn shows for as long as I've been in Brooklyn and have seen some stellar shows i.e. Metric, The Swell Season and Dr. Dog and have made some exciting new musical discoveries through the Celebrate Brooklyn shows i.e. These United States and White Magic. And I've also thoroughly enjoyed things I never thought I would, for instance seeing silent films from the 1920's while the Brooklyn Philharmonic played the orginal scores for each of the films.

The Celebrate Brooklyn schedule for this summer has come out and here it is. I'm looking forward to RaRa Riot, Buke and Gass, Justin Townes Earl, The London Souls, Dr. John and even The West Side Story sing a long.

Monday morning hahas

Due to spending most of Saturday night in a post Kentucky Derby/mint julep haze I missed Tina Fey hosting the Mother's Day episode of "Saturday Night Live". But I did catch the episode on Hulu the next day and I have to say to me it was one of the best episodes of "Saturday Night Live" in a while.

The skits that really made me laugh where the Osama bin Laden/Little Mermaid Skit  and the digital short of Lonely Island (I have such a thing for the nerdy looking blond guy in Lonely Island) singing with Michael Bolton about Captain Jack Sparrow from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films. I've posted both clips below I hope they make you laugh as much as they did me.

And cause Drink Up Buttercup is so good, here is a clip of  Drink Up Buttercup's song"Young Ladies" being played live.

Kentucky Derby Day

Yesterday was the Kentucky Derby and growing up Kentucky Derby day was always a big deal in my family. My uncle would always throw a Kentucky Derby day party complete with hats and trips to OTB. Every year I try and watch the derby to me it's always so exciting!

Anyhow yesterday I had the pleasure of going to the Bellhouse in Brooklyn for their Kentucky Derby party, the Bellhouse Kentucky Derby day party was thrown by a Kentucky ex pat named Michael Boyd. I dawned my finest floral dress and a hat that I put together at the last minute it was my beret with magnolia's pinned to it (don't laugh the beret is the only hat I own, I just don't have a big hat face) and headed over to the Bellhouse where I had one too many mint juleps, didn't win any money (my betting stratgey is always go with the horse that has the best name..it rarely works!) and had loads of fun.

Here are my pictures from yesterday
