I fucking LOVE Goes Cube! The band plays a pre SXSW Brooklyn Vegan sponsored show next Weds 3/9 at the Studio at Webster Hall in Manhattan. Goes Cube also does a few SXSW dates and for all you peeps who will be down in Austin for SXSW I highly recommend checking out Goes Cube. And for all you peeps who don't give a shit about SXSW or are too broke to go to Austin for SXSW, I highly recommend seeing them play the Studio at Webster Hall on 3/9. Seeing Goes Cube live is an amazing orgasmic experience!
In the meantime check out the video for Goes Cube's song "Song 30".
As mentioned previously I will not be gracing the citizens of Austin TX with my presence from March 16th to March 20th for South by Southwest due to the very small limited Whatever blog travel budget for 2011. The travel budget for 2012 will be a larger one allowing me to venture to SXSW 2012 and get that picture with a certain perky TV chef whose lawyer husband's band always seems to play SXSW!
Anyhow the Whatever blog will be co presenting a SXSW 2011 showcase in absentia the other co presenters on the show will be Whatever blog friends TJ Olsen and Paper Garden Records who unlike me will be present at SXSW! The show is on March 16th and I will have more details in the next few days. All you folks who are heading down to SXSW need to check out our show and other Whatever blog friends and favorites such as These United States, Vandaveer, The Headless Horseman and Ty Segall who will be playing SXSW 2011 at various other showcases.
One artist who will be playing SXSW 2011 that I'm totally loving right now is Idiot Glee. Idiot Glee's (also known as James Friley a 23 year old Mormon from Lexington KY) sound can best be described as 50's white boy doo woop meets shoegaze. Idiot Glee is pretty fresh and unique and you ought to check him out.
Below is the clip for Idiot Glee's song "I Want The Night To Stay". ENJOY!
This Academy Awards or the Oscars took place this past Sunday and for all of you who live under a rock the Oscars gives out awards for excellence in films. One of the people that won an Oscar on Sunday is Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, Reznor won for best original musical score for his work on the film "The Social Network". And as mentioned in previous blog posts I'm a huge Nine Inch Nails fan so Reznor's win on Sunday for me was a bit shocking but also really cool and very punk rock to me. This Oscar win means that Trent has really come full circle as a musician and is now getting the respect he so deserves from "the powers that be".
Lately I've been watching a lot of John Waters films and for all those who have never watched his films they basically are outrageous and very funny looks at life in Baltimore, which is Waters hometown. As you well all know I grew up on Long Island and most of the time I don't really like to admit to people that I'm from Long Island originally, but as of late from watching all those Waters films and seeing his Baltimore pride and the way that his films are his own unique love letters to Baltimore, has kinda brought out my Long Island pride! I won't be making any crazy films about delinquents on Long Island (Lindsay Lohan and J-Woww from "The Jersey Shore" would star in that) anytime soon, but from watching Waters films I see the zaniness and humor of the place where I grew up and how great that is.
You and your friends need to have a John Waters film night start with "Pink Flamingos" and end with his latest film 2004's "A Dirty Shame"..trust me you will have a great time! And hopefully after watching John Waters' films you and your friends will see the beauty, humor and insanity of your hometowns!
On the music side a band that makes me feel total Strong Island pride is a Long Island band called Northern State. And I know I'm way late to the Northern State party but I just love Northern State's really cool sound and the empowering girl power messages of their songs. Below is the clip for the song "Better Already",the song is a few years old but it's really awesome!
These days Northern State frontwoman Hesta Prynn is making lots of really major electornica/ rock music that you need to check out!
And just a few quick things before I end this blog post; I'm sad to say that it looks as if I will not be making it to SXSW this year )-: I will be there next year for sure!
