Due to the crappy weather in New York and the sparse January concert season, I have been on a serious movie kick and one of the many films I watched in the last couple of days was "The Runaways" with Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart. And for all of you living under a rock, The Runaways were one of the first all female rock and roll bands and the band that brought both Joan Jett and Lita Ford into the public eye.
Joan Jett executive produced a bio pic called "The Runaways" which was based on the autobiography "Neon Angel" written by the band's lead singer Cherie Currie. "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart plays Joan Jett and former child star Dakota Fanning plays lead singer Cherie Currie. "The Runaways" was released into theaters last year and is now on DVD, and you need to Netflix it or pick it up at your local DVD store cause "The Runaways" is just soooo good!
Kristen Stewart is Joan Jett! She nails her look, voice and mannerisms! Dakota Fanning is amazing as Cherie Currie, she really captures rock and roll teen age angst and 70's rock and roll excess to a t. And apparently both Dakota and Kristen did their own vocals for the film and I have to say I was really impressed with Kristen Stewart she really captures Joan's raw growl beautifully. Dakota on the other hand did a good job but to me she didn't have enough of Cherie Currie's vocal bite.
After watching "The Runaways", I got on such a Joan Jett/Runaways kick that I watched a doc about The Runaways called "Edgeplay". "Edgeplay" was made by the band's second bass player Vicki Blue and all band members with the exception of Joan Jett are interviewed. "Edgeplay" is a really interesting look at The Runaways and what it was like to be in an all female teenage rock band at a time when rock music was really a boys club. I highly recommend Netflixing or picking up "Edgeplay" as well.
Below is the Runaways in their full glory performing "Cherry Bomb".

Folk operas and most perfect songs
Ahh the second post of the new year!
Dear Whatever blog friend These United States frontman, Jesse Elliott is involved in a very cool thing that happens this up and coming Monday night Jan 10th in New York City. This very cool thing that Mr. Elliott is involved in on January 10th is a live performance of singer songwriter Anais Mitchell's folk opera "Hadestown" at The Rockwood Music Hall in Manhattan.
"Hadestown" has been described by Ms. Mitchell's manager as "the story of Orpheus and Eurydice set in post-apocalyptic Depression-era America.", for all you kids not up on your Greek mythology & gods, Orpheus is the father of songs and Eurydice was an oak nymph and a daughter of Apollo, she was also the wife of Orpheus. Jesse Elliott is singing the part of Hermes (who was the great messenger of the gods)and besides Jesse, Ben Knox Miller of the Low Anthem, Amy Correia and Jefferson Hammer all will be singing various parts of "Hadestown".
Again this all happens at The Rockwood Music Hall in Manhattan on January 10th, to get your tickets (and you really should cause this is going to be really awesome and interesting)click here.
As mentioned in a previous blog post I watched a documentary on singer songwriter Harry Nilsson called "Who is Harry Nilsson and Why is Everyone Talking About Him". After watching this doc I got on a Harry Nilsson kick and really started to discover Harry Nilsson's music. One of Harry's songs that really struck me is a song called "Don't Forget Me", off the 1974 album "Pussycats" which was produced by John Lennon. "Don't Forget Me" has to be one of the most perfect songs, musically and lyrically it's so beautiful and raw! And the heartfelt emotion in Harry Nilsson's voice on this track is so bloody brilliant. "Don't Forget Me" is posted below, take a listen and see if you agree with me about the song being perfect in every single way.

Happy 2011 everyone! I hope the first two days of 2011 have been good ones for you and your loved ones. I know that 2011 will be a great year!
Starting off 2011 right with a little Alcoholic Faith Mission. The name of the song is "Guilty Scarred Eyes".
And I'll throw in a little Drink Up Buttercup for good measure!
