Yesterday I was chatting with a friend about Phil Spector and the female singers he helped helm i.e. Darlene Love and Ronnie Spector. When talking about Darlene Love we both felt that she was one of the most underrated female singers in rock history who never really got her due. And a huge part of her underrated status is because she was screwed over creatively and financially by Phil Spector and that prevented her in a lot of ways from becoming the huge star that she should have been.
When I got home last night, I took a listen to some of the songs Darlene Love sang for Phil Spector and once again was blown away by the sheer beauty and raw emotion of her voice and (say what you will about Spector) the production of those songs. I've heard people say that Phil Spector is the godfather of shoegaze and I definitely think that is true take a listen to a bands like The Diamond Center or Apollo Heights and even Interpol you'll hear that influence.
