Serge Gainsbourg

As mentioned I got a new iPod touch. One of the applications I put on my new iPod touch is Pandora radio. For all you Luddites; Pandora radio is this Internet radio you can type in a song or an artist and Pandora will play you the music of that artist or that song plus any other artist that has a similar music style to that artist or song.

And as of late I've been listening to the Serge Gainsbourg channel on Pandora. For all you kids not in the know, Serge Gainsbourg was a very controversial French singer songwriter who had a career that started in the 60's up until he died in 1991. He had hot and heavy affairs with legendary French actress Bridget Bardot and British actress/model Jane Birkin with whom he fathered indie musician/actress Charlotte Gainsbourg with. He collaborated musically with both women. With Bardot their biggest hit together was "Bonnie and Clyde" and with Jane Birkin it was "Je t' aime...moi non plus". The later was quite a controversial song because it was generally about a sexual encounter and Jane Birkin simulated an orgasm half way through the song.

In the 70's Gainsbourg caused controversy by recording a reggae version of the French National Anthem with Bob and Rita Marley. And in the 80's he was still pushing buttons when he recorded a song with his daughter Charlotte called "Lemon Incest". In 1986 he appeared drunk on a late night TV talk show in France with Whitney Houston where he proclaimed that he "wanted to Fuck her". Serge Gainsbourg passed away in 1991 from a heart attack.

Here are some clips of Serge Gainsbourg songs.

"Je t' aime....moi non plus"
"Ford Mustang"
"Ballade de Melody Nelson"

Enjoy!

The Who and Mose Allison

As you all know The Who are one of my favorite all time bands. They made me wanna do what I do. Who songs are scared to me like with die hard Beatle fans there are few Who covers that I do like.

Anyhow last night here in New York City there was a Who tribute show at Carnegie Hall. Those who took part include Nicole Atkins (who I really want to like but to me she's slowly becoming the Sheryl Crow of her generation), Vanessa Carlton (I think she, Colbie Caillat and Sarah Bareilles are all the same person), a NYC band who to me aren't worth naming cause they are the only band that I can't stand both musically and personally and the brilliant and legendary blues and jazz artist Mose Allison to name a few.

Sorry Nicole Atkins, Vanessa Carlton and that band your treading on sacred ground here by performing Who covers and performing on the same bill with someone as genius and legendary as Mose Allison! And Mose you deserve better then having to perform on the same bill as that band!

Now Dig Mose Allison doing "Tell Me Something"

And nothing is better then the original. Here's The Who doing "I Can't Explain".

My thoughts: Babies in bars

Happy March everyone!

I'm starting off this month with my thoughts on a big brewing issue in my Brooklyn neighborhood and that is parents bringing small children into bars. This has become such a hot issue that CNN picked up the story. If you click on the title link you can read their article on the topic.

To give all of you who may not know a little background, the neighborhood that I live in, in Brooklyn has lots of young single people such a myself and lots of young families. There are also lots of really great bars and restaurants in the neighborhood.

Before I go on I must say I'm not anti child, I do love kids and hope to be a mom one day.

Okay moving on! The three main arguments that these young Brooklyn parents give is that; 1) it's okay if it's done before the bar starts to get filled i.e. at 5pm which is the start of happy hour at many bars. 2) When you go to places such as Ireland and the English country side you see entire families in pubs. 3) Babysitters are way too expensive.

I say to these parents; 1) It's not okay to have your small child in a bar no matter what time of the day it is.

2) Brooklyn isn't Ireland or the English Country side. I know people who own bars in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Long Island the amount of money that bar owners in New York pay each month in insurance is mighty high! And the Irish and English aren't as lawsuit happy as us Americans. Come on you know that if one of your precious little darlings should get hurt on one of your 5pm bar jaunts..you'd be the first to sue!

3) Don't you have some friends who live near by who would be willing to watch the baby while you and your significant other went out for a drink? When my older sister who is a single mother, gets the rare occasion to go out with her boyfriend she has several friends who live near by who she can call on to watch her kids. I'm sure all of you have friends near by that you can call on when you and your SO want to go out for a dinner and a drink.

Not to sound like I'm a billion years old but I remember when my parents went out without us kids, it meant that they wanted to get away from us kids for a few hours and spend time together without us.

It's okay if you go out to a bar without your precious little darling, believe me the baby will live if you leave the baby with a friend for a few hours while you and your SO get a drink and spend sometime together!

As I mentioned one day I would like to be a mother and even when I become a mom my stance on babies in bars won't change!

And those are my thoughts!

Now enjoy the Giraffes "Man U"

And some "Honor Amongst Thieves" by These United States
