"Where The Wild Things Are" a review

Yesterday I went and I saw Spike Jonze's film adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's book "Where The Wild Things Are". "Where The Wild Things Are" was one of mine and my sisters' favorite books when we were kids. "Where The Wild Things Are" is about Max a boy who, one night while wearing his wolf costume runs around his house pretending he is a wild thing which gets him in trouble with his mother. After he is sent to bed without any supper he retreats to the land of the Wild Things were fearsome monsters live. Max conquers the monsters and then is declared "King of the Wild Things". He dances and plays with the monsters then feeling homesick he returns to his bedroom.

Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers' adapted screenplay pretty much sticks to the original story. But there are some real life and "grown up" elements added to the story. Such as Max has a family, he is being raised along side his teenage sister Claire by his divorced mother who is played by Catherine Keener. Once Max goes to the Kingdom of the Wild Things the screenplay interweaves really beautiful messages of love, friendship and family (which kinda doesn't stray all that far from the original story) and taking care of Mother Earth.

Visually this film is stunning. The Land of The Wild Things is vast forests, beautiful beaches and stark deserts.

The monsters of the Land of The Wild Things are amazing Jim Hensen Creature shop creations who look exactly like Maurice Sendak's illustrations come to life. The monsters are voiced by Catherine O' Hara, James Gandolfini,Chris Cooper, Forest Whitaker, "Six Feet Under's" Lauren Ambrose and "Little Miss Sunshine's" Paul Dano who all do an awesome job of giving these monsters unique personalities.
The young actor who plays Max is named Max Records who does a fantastic job with the role. He really gets the character and all that is going on around him. And he doesn't come off as an obnoxious child actor trying to be all cutesy with this role!

Oh and Karen O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs provides a really trippy and sweet score for the film!

Since this story as such a huge and beloved part of my childhood, I really went into the theater thinking that Spike Jonze had butchered something that was so sacred. And after seeing the film my way of thinking prior to seeing "Where The Wild Things Are" was so wrong! I just LOVED LOVED LOVED this film!! Spike Jonze has made a truly classic film that both adults and older kids (10 and up) can enjoy, I wouldn't take the real little ones to see it too many scenes were they might get scared.

I highly recommend spending the $12 to see "Where The Wild Things Are".

Moving along...this past weekend I went and I saw the film "Paranormal Activity". "Paranormal Activity" has been getting a lot of attention in the press as of late, because it's a very indie horror film made with very little money two years ago that got so much buzz on the underground horror film circuit that it attracted the attention of Stephen Spielberg. Spielberg and his company Dreamworks were so impressed with the film that they are now one of the distributors of "Paranormal Activity". After seeing the film this weekend I can see why Spielberg was so impressed with this film it is one of the scariest films that I have ever seen!

The film is shot amateur documentary style ala "The Blair Witch Project". And all I will tell you about that plot (cause I don't want to ruin anything for you) is that it deals with a young couple named Katie and Micah and the strange goings on at their home. To me the scariest type of horror film is one where it's just one big mind fuck. I just hate all that violence and gore! Anyhow "Paranormal Activity" is one big mind fuck in the best way possible and it totally messes with the viewer's head in the scariest way without resorting to bloodshed.

"Paranormal Activity" is so worth the $12! I have the feeling "Paranormal Activity" going to become a true horror classic!
