The Black Lips

Friends of mine are going to see the Black Lips this up and coming Monday night at the Bowery Ballroom here in NYC. I would normally be there with them, but since I have to move yet again at the end of the month so I'm limited on funds for the time being. The Black Lips are one of the best indie bands out there they are truly unique, they call themselves "Flower Punks", the sound of the Black Lips incorporates a little bit of everything but I would compare it to old school 60's Latin garage rock. Live they are one of the most insane bands they have been known to make out with each other on stage and do things like vomit and pee as well on stage. I saw them last summer at McCarren Pool here in Brooklyn and they were really awesome they didn't do anything outrageous that day! If you check back on my 2008 enteries I posted some of the pictures from that show. Anyhow the Black Lips have a new album out called "200 Million Thousand" which is so worth a download and they are on tour right now in support of this new album and they are worth a check out when they come to your town.

Below is a clip of the song "Cold Hands" off their 2007 album "Good Bad Not Evil", which is also worth a download. And I've also included the picture of moi and Ian the guitar player from the Black Lips at McCarren. Enjoy!!

Get well Peter Tork and Gigs up for grabs!

Our dear friends over at GNYC Music Company have standing Friday night shows at the Mean Fiddler in mid town Manhattan. And on Friday night March 20th there are two slots up for grabs for the GNYC/Mean Fiddler Friday show, the times of those two slots are 10:15pm and 11:15pm.

In order to take one of these two slots, you or your band must be able to bring in fifteen plus people on a Friday night.

These GNYC/Mean Fiddler shows are great stepping stones for playing other GNYC shows at other venues across Manhattan, Brooklyn and New Jersey.

If you are interested please email Denise at gnyctv@aol.com.

In other music news I was really sad to read that Peter Tork of the Monkees is really sick with a rare form of cancer on his tongue. If you don't know who the Monkees were, they basically were the first boy band. The Monkees were America's answer to the Beatles back in the 60's, they were put together by producers and they had their own TV show where they would have an adventure and sing a song at the end. The Monkees TV show in a way was a pre cursor to MTV, when MTV played music videos and didn't have crappy reality shows like they do now! And people like Frank Zappa made cameos on the show and Tim Buckley (father of Jeff) performed "Song of the Siren" at the end of one of the episodes.

The Monkees had some really great, well crafted pop songs that were writen for them by people such as Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Neil Diamond, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Heart. And Mike Nesmith (the tall guy from Texas who always wore the wool hat) wrote some really great Monkee songs as well.

In 1986 MTV re aired the Monkees TV show and the Monkees reunited sans Mike Nesmith. The Monkees reunion in 1986 was the first concert that I went to at Great Adventure in New Jersey.

If you like really good well crafted 60's pop do yourself and download a Monkees greatest hits album the best songs being "The Porpose Song", "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Steppin Stone". And if you wanna see a really trippy film rent "Head" which is the Monkees film, Frank Zappa makes a cameo, as well as Annette of "Frankie and Annette" fame and a very young Terri Garr has a bit part. Jack Nicholson co wrote the screen play to "Head".

Get well Peter Tork! And to get your Friday trip on here is a clip of Frank Zappa's cameo in "Head". "The youth of America depends on you to show the way!"
