And we interrupt this coverage of CMJ, to bring you this story about a McCain volunteer who claimed she was mugged by an Obama Supporter who carved a B in her cheek. Now the young McCain volunteer admits that she made the story up.

Okay we continue back to covering CMJ.
Tonight I will be going to see Mother Mother at the Mercury Lounge, The Crystal Castles at Webster Hall, The Giraffes and Appllo Heights at Le Poisson Rouge. Tomorrow, I'm off to the Brooklyn Vegan/CMJ afternoon show at The Knitting Factory to see Delta Spirit, Takka Takka (who I'm due to chat with after their set tomorrow) and Rival Schools. Then hopefully if the badge quota hasn't been met, Nick and I will mosey on to the Bowery Ballroom to see Little Jackie. We'll end the night at the GNYC/Unsunghereos.com/CMJ showcase at the Mean Fiddler in midtown.
You'll all get a full report along with pictures next week.

A quick chat with The Canon Logic at CMJ

One of the many bands whose set I had the pleasure of watching at CMJ, is a band based out of Brooklyn by way of Philly called the Canon Logic. The band consists of Tim Kiely on lead vocals and guitar, Mark Alu on keys, guitar and vocals, Sean Enright on bass, Josh Greenfield on guitar and vocals and Michael Mignano on drums.
The sound of the Canon Logic can best be described as the Beach Boys meet the Strokes and their live shows are a very fun high energy 60’s mod dance party. I was able to speak briefly to the boys of The Canon Logic after their CMJ set at Arlene’s Grocery in Manhattan. And this is what they had to say, enjoy!
AG: In your own words can you describe the sound of The Canon Logic?
MA: We like to describe the sound of the Canon Logic as a mint scented breath of fresh air! We think cinnamon is for chumps! (Everyone laughs) We do a lot of vocal harmony which is something not a lot of bands are doing right now.
TK: We mix harmony with rock, simply put.
AG: There is a song you guys played tonight with a rather interesting title called “I Slept With Your Best Friend”, is there a story behind that song?
TK: There is a story! One of my best friends was in love with his girlfriend’s best friend. And he always talked to me about it and he always tried to make moves on the girl. So I ended up writing this song from his perspective talking to his girlfriend’s best friend, telling her that he was in love with her. But in real life… it didn’t work out!!
AG: Besides love gone wrong, what else inspires the Canon Logic to write songs?
TK: There is a lot of real life brought into Canon Logic songs. Songwriting starts when one of us will bring a song to the group about what ever that person wants that song to be about. And usually we put the song together by adding our own distinctive pieces to that song.
AG: I read that you guys are working on your first full length album, when can fans expect this album?
JG: Early ’09 we’re shooting for an early February release date.
TK: We finished our first four tracks, so we’re making great progress!
SE: In the meantime we kinda wanna hold everyone over till the release of the album and so we have an EP out now called “The White Balloon”. People can order that through our website.
AG: After CMJ, what does the future hold for The Canon Logic?
MA: We have a show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken on November 8th with some other really good bands. We’re trying to buckle down and do some recording but that will never get done if we keep playing shows!
SE: We keep saying, that we’re gonna buckle down and do some recording but we keep taking more shows. Now we’re really gonna put the shows on lock down.
MA: We love playing live… so it’s hard!
AG: How did it feel to be asked to play CMJ?
MA: It felt GREAT! It’s was so validating to see our name listed with bands that we really respect and admire, it means our hard work is starting to pay off!
The Canon Logic plays Maxwell’s in Hoboken, New Jersey on November 8th .

CMJ/TeePee Records showcase pictures
My ultra talented photographer friend Nick Savage took some really great shots of Hopewell's set at the CMJ/TeePee records showcase. Nick also took some great shots of the band that followed Hopewell called the Weight. I only stayed for the first song of the Weight's set and the Weight had this really cool country, punk straight ahead rock sound. Think "Exile on Main Street" era Stones, mixed in with The Clash with some Gram Parsons thrown in for good measure, that'll give you a good idea of The Weight's sound.

TeePee Records/ CMJ showcase
The Canon Logic interview will be up and posted tomorrow.
Last night I went to the TeePee Records/CMJ showcase at Club Europa in Brooklyn. TeePee Records is home to bands such as Weird Owl, Ancestors, Annihilation Time, Hopewell, The Weight and Titan among others. On the bill for the TeePee Records/CMJ showcase last night were Titan, The Weight, Weird Owl, Night Horse, Hopewell and King Tuff.
I caught the tail end of Weird Owl's set. And I thought that Weird Owl's sound was very similar to the Black Angels (who I interviewed when they played the APW festival this past summer), despite that I thought Weird Owl was a really pretty decent band. Weird Owl, was pretty tight and I really thought there was some interesting guitar work going on there. The band that went on after Weird Owl was a band called Hopewell. I really really liked Hopewell!! They had a very ethereal and physcadelic hard sound. Hopewell's sound, reminded me very much of old school Pink Floyd circa "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" crossed with Sonic Youth, Portishead and a little bit of Jimi Hendrix. Hopewell made use of feedback in their live set, the band made it sound melodic in a really beautiful way.
The front man for Hopewell is a guy by the name of Jason Russo who has one of the best rock voices that I have heard in a while. Russo has a very dramatic presence on stage. Guitarist Lyndon Roeller, bassist Rich Meyer, keyboardist Tyson Lewis and drummer Jay Green are phenomenal musicians who make Hopewell one awesome band! My friend Nick took pictures of Hopewell's set last night which should be up and posted soon.
Hopewell has an album out called "Beautiful Targets" that was released in 2007. Prior to "Beautiful Targets" release the band released a rock opera in 2005 called "Hopewell & The Birds of Appetite" which was produced by Dave Fridmann of the Flaming Lips.

More stuff
I thought I would start off this post with an election story. Apparently the GOP has spent $150,000.00 making Sarah "Hockey Mom, Joe Six Pack, small towns are the real America" Palin look good. The sweet little normal hockey mom went on a $49 grand shopping spree at Saxs Fifth Avenue stores in St. Louis and New York and spent $75 grand on clothes and accessories right before the GOP national convention at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis. Four grand was spent on hair and make up for Sarah.
Normally this wouldn't be such a huge deal, but when fancy yourself and keep telling us your a regular "Joe Sixpack" from a small town which in your own words is the "real America", it seems a bit hypocritical to spend $150 grand on clothes, make up, hair and jewelry.
Anyhow onto the music, I've been covering CMJ for the blog and last night was the first night. Last night I saw this really amazing band at the Fearless Music showcase at Arlene's Grocery called The Canon Logic. I also got to speak with the boys from the Canon Logic after their set at Arlene's. I should have that interview up and and posted some time tomorrow. I also got to speak with this other really amazing band called The Mood, I should have their interview up and posted next week. I'm also set to chat with really cool arthouse Brooklyn band Takka Takka on saturday and straight outta Jersey rockin' band Status Green on friday. I should have those two interviews up and posted next week as well. My friend Nick Savage is coming along with me on my CMJ journey to take pictures, I should have Nick's pictures up and posted later on in the week next week.
Last night, I didn't have the chance to see sets from anyone else but the bands that I was due to interview. One of the things about CMJ is that it is so massive that it's so hard to get to every show, especially when your due to interview participants. Tonight I have no set interviews and so Nick and I are going to see what CMJ related activities are going on in Williamsburg out in Brooklyn. You'll get a full report tomorrow and hopefully I'll be able to get some on the sly interviews!
MEANY Fest '08 shots up real soon!
I leave you today with a video clip of the Canon Logic performing the song "Avenue of Criminals".
And I just had to go there with this! It's Duffy Lucas "performing" "Sussudio" by Phil Collins from that great 1980's show "Puttin' on the Kids". Duffy is just so awesome! Check out those fan kicks! Not to go off on a ADD tangent here but listening to the song in this clip just reminded me that, Phil Collins had some seriously shitty solo songs "In the Air Tonight" was his only really good solo song. Remember in the early 90's when Phil got serious and became self rightous Phil and released that really serious album full of songs with messages?! That song "Another Day in Paradise" was on that album. That was Phil's song telling us we're all bad people and he's a good person cause he writes songs to help the homeless.
And in terms of what Duffy is doing now, I like to think that Duffy Lucas has changed his name and is the lead singer of a very hip New York new wave pop band that's getting a lot of press and is playing CMJ! Enjoy!!

Checking in
Well it looks as if all of my bitching about CMJ charging the press $495 for a pass paid off! A very dear friend was able to get me a pass to CMJ!
So all this week I will be covering CMJ shows. I hope to have some interviews with some of the bands and artists and pictures of some of the shows posted this week.
Despite the fact that I was able to get a pass through a friend, I still think that it is BS to charge the press $495 for a one week pass! I read in this week's Time Out New York, that sometimes a CMJ pass doesn't automatically get you get you into some of the shows!! And that really is bull shit!
Anyhow stay on the look out for pictures and chats from CMJ.
Well the real deal music festival MEANY came to an end this past Saturday night, with successful shows at the Knitting Factory, Arlene's and the Annex. My friend Nick Savage took some amazing pictures of the Saturday night show at the Knitting Factory. I should have those pictures posted sometime this week as well.
