Just a few things.......

Tomorrow my Johnny Lloyd Rollins chat will be up and posted for sure!

It's a busy musical weekend.

My friend's label Glassnote just signed Secondhand Serenade to their label and John or Secondhand Serenade's album "A Twist In My Story" just came out this past tuesday Feb 19th and it's widely available everywhere. I was lucky enough to hear the new album in it's entirety and it's very good! The first single "Fall for You" has made it into MTV's TRL top ten. Any how Secondhand Serenade will be playing the Conan O'Brien show tonight 2/22 on NBC at 12:30am, John is well worth staying in for on a friday night!

Fidel steps down and at the movies with Amy part duex

My Johnny Lloyd Rollins interview should be up and posted by the end of the week this week at the latest. Be on the look out!

Big news today Fidel Castro stepped down as leader of Cuba. His brother Raul is set to take over power. The US government says that the embargo will still stand even with Raul in power.

There are pros and cons in regard to Fidel and his rule over Cuba. He's known to have been a violent dictator who has opressed Cuba's gay citizens (what the film "Before Night Falls" was about) and has jailed or killed citizens known to have spoken out against him or his government. He censors the Cuban press. But at the same time he's also given his citizens full and good health care coverage and has the AIDS situation in Cuba under control. He's also raised the literacy rate in Cuba and Cuba has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world.

With all of his pros and cons I've always found him to be a facinating individual and his rise to power a very interesting story. And usually any film you see on him or anything you read about him it's either pro Fidel or anti Fidel. A few years back American Experience on PBS aired a film about Fidel and it presented both sides of the argument about Castro. It was really well done and I wonder if they will re air it in light of the recent news?? If so and your a history/political geek like me it's worth watching.

I hope the embargo gets lifted soon because I would really love to travel to Cuba. It looks as if it's a beautiful country and I've always had an interest in Cuban music and culture. Those Germans and Canadians go all the time...it's a big vacation spot for them!

Onto the next subject....movies!

Yesterday I saw "There Will Be Blood" with Daniel Day Lewis. The film is about a self made oil tycoon in early 20th century California. The main character is supposedly based on a real life early 20th century California oil tycoon Edward Doheny. And parts of the story are based on the Upton Sinclair novel from 1927 "Oil". Daniel Day Lewis is one of my all time favorite actors and his performance in this film doesn't disapoint! He really captures the unhappiness, greed and competative nature of this character. Paul Dano who played the brother in the film "Little Miss Sunshine", plays a young evangelical preacher in "There Will Be Blood" and he really does an amazing job. And the young boy who plays Daniel Day Lewis' son also does an amazing job with his role. My only complaint with this film is that at times it's very slow moving (it's a three hour film) and it went off on tangents that really weren't relevant to the main plot, which made the overall plot a little choppy. I was meh on this film, I would say go and see it if your into brilliant acting and period peices.

Onto the next film!
Since I didn't have a Valentine on Valentine's day...I went to go and see the most anti Valentine's day film I could think of "The Savages" with Laura Linney and Phillip Seymor Hoffman. The film is about a brother (Hoffman) and sister (Linney) who have to deal with their estranged father's recent diagnosis of demintia and the guilt of putting him into a nursing home. The struggle and guilt that PSH and LL's characters go through with their father's illness and putting him into a nursing home, reminded me of the emotion of what my mother and uncle's delt with when dealing with putting their grandmother into a nursing home after she had a series of strokes. I'm sure there are many other people who have found themselves in and can relate to the predicament that the two main characters go through in this film. But honestly I would wait for this film to come on HBO or the IFC. I thought it was better suited as a made for TV film for one of those channels.

Johnny Lloyd Rollins be on the look out!!
