Singing Twins

Last thursday night I had the distinct pleasure of going to see Tegan and Sara at Southpaw in Brooklyn with some dear friends.

For all of you who aren't in the know Tegan and Sara and identical twin sisters from Canada who rock! They are signed to Neil Young's label in Canada and their sound is a cross between the White Stripes and the Cocteau Twins, one of their songs "Walking with a Ghost" was used in promos for the TV show "Medium" and the White Stripes covered "Walking with a Ghost". They have a new album out called "The Con". The new album is awesome and much more cerebral compared to their earlier efforts, the songs are simplistic and really beautiful.

They put on a great live show one sister plays guitar, while the other plays keyboards and they have a male drummer and a male bass player. As musicians they rock, they are a tight little band! And both sisters are really charming and have great stage presence. They tell these cute and humorous stories in between each song, between the music and the stories you see why Tegan and Sara have such a loyal following. And what I found fascinating about their stories is that one would finish the others sentence and just the way they faced each other on stage was interesting too one faced out while the other faced in and if you look at their pictures it's the same way too. And after seeing them I was utterly fascinated by the phenomenon musical twins and how it works with twins who are musical!

My friend Ethan Gold is an identical twin and he is in a band with his brother Ari. And I can remember hearing an interview with Robin and Maurice Gibb years ago, where Maurice was talking about how he and Robin always had this psychic bond and I've heard and read that people who are twins have that psychic bond between them. So I'm curious to know if musical twins such as Tegan and Sara and Ari and Ethan are on the same page when it comes to songwriting. Cause usually one person brings one thing to the table and another brings another thing to the table, so what I basically would like to know is if musical twins think in the same way when it comes to music??

I guess that is a question I will have to ask Tegan and Sara in their interview or Ethan Gold in the next interview!!

Besides Tegan and Sara's new album, I have been on a serious Kate Bush kick. I've always loved her voice, lyrics and arrangements, which are very unique . Every time I listen to her music I always feel very womanly in a very English Bronte sisters almost goth kinda of a way, which is a good thing!! I've been listening too "Hounds of Love", "The Sensual World" and "The Kick Inside" non stop as of late, "The Sensual World" and "Hounds of Love" are my two favorite Kate Bush albums you almost feel like your magically transported to the English moors in your corset waiting for Heathcliff when you listen to Kate's music!! Kate is a true original!!
